Costumers Product Reviews

Pros

I've had chance to test the camera out for a while now, so thought I would write a few comments.

Firstly, the camera ergonomics are good. The camera is solid and reassuringly weighty but not so much to become a burden. Not quite pocketable in a pair of jeans but easily in a jacket or small bag.

The controls and operation are all smooth and feel solid and high quality. The front dial for changing settings such as zoom, aperture or speed depending on mode is really easy to use. There are two modes, clicker and smooth. I prefer clicker mode as this gives good feedback when changes are made. If you change it over to smooth operation it becomes a bit vague and zooming seems to take a lot of turning from one end to the other. I can see this been great for video as there will be no noise and transitions will be much smoother. I just prefer the positive click giving me the confidence I've made a change. I don't take a lot of video so the smoother mode isn't a feature I really need but I'm sure vloggers will appreciate it.

The mode dial and exposure compensation dial have great resistance to turning. I have another Powershot camera that has a habit of changing modes when you are taking it in and out of a pocket leading to taking shots in the wrong mode. This one however needs a positive action to change the settings. I like the fact the exposure compensation dial is under the mode dial. It's in the perfect position to change with your thumb without having to look around the camera or move your hand around to change it. The smaller dial on the back of the camera is a bit too small for my liking, but I guess there is limited space there to put anything bigger. It's also very easy to turn the dial and not notice. The other buttons are well placed and easy to use.

The LCD screen is excellent. It's nice and bright with plenty of detail and has all the information you would need. It can be customised to show the modes and information you want. The touch function works very well but I have touched it accidently a few times and changed my focus point. This is more to do with my big fat hands than the camera though. All the settings I need can be changed from the touchscreen with no fuss while shooting. This is the first touchscreen camera I have had and I must say it makes shooting, focusing and altering setting so much easier. In fact it has encouraged me to experiment more because I'm not messing around with menus and sub menus. The fact the screen is articulated is a real bonus. I have used it many times to get that low angle shot without having to strain to see the screen.

So to the main thing, performance and picture quality. The camera starts up in about a second and is ready to use. I have found focusing using the touchscreen very fast and accurate. Changing focus point is so easy and focus tracking is solid unless you move the camera around too much or too quickly. Leaving the camera to focus on its own has resulted in the camera picking the wrong subject a couple of times but they were quite busy scenes. Image stabilisation is very effective and lets you get great shots even at low speeds handheld. I don't like using ISO's higher than 800 as a rule so the solid IS is great. HDR mode works really well resulting in well balanced detailed images as does the ND filter but best to use a tripod or solid surface for these. Video quality is on par with any 1080p camera but as I say I don't really use this much.

Pictures out of the camera set to best JPEG are amazing. I don't say this lightly either. My main camera is a 7D with L series lens and the G7X ii is easily as sharp, colourful and detailed if not more so. There are lots of customisable functions for your JPEG photos like light optimiser and so on but to be honest the images are great at default settings. I have taken some shots in RAW to test it out but my version of Phase One doesn't recognise the files and Canon's own DPP software just seems so slow at rendering the images it's not worth the effort. I use RAW all the time with my DSLR but don't think I need it 95% of the time with a compact as good as this. Shutter lag is almost not noticeable but I have found taking a few shots of my cat moving horizontally to the camera did result in slightly blurred images even though I was tracking/panning the cat.

The zoom range is about perfect for usability and picture quality. My other Powershot goes up to over 200mm equivalent. This affects the picture quality badly unless you have very good light. The GX7 ii on the other hand has great picture quality through the full zoom range. It is expensive for a compact camera but quality like this isn't cheap. I would definitely recommend this camera for almost any type of photography not requiring a long lens. Oh and not to forget the vloggers!

Cons

The camera is light and easy to carry, but the video quality is pretty bad. Indoors it has a lot of noise (you have to go through other programs later to make the image clean). If what you record is more than 2 meters away and is a person, forget about the details of the face, my 200€ mobile takes better photos and videos (I do not exaggerate). Record on an excursion, sports event, holidays..? Forget, or you carry 2 or 3 batteries (which you have to buy part) or the original will last 40 minutes and give thanks. The overall lousy camera life too, the sealing is horrible, it gets dust and you can't remove it without disassembling the entire chamber. Auto focus is quite deficient, if you don't put it manually or you set it at a point, as you record a video, it will be doing “re-focus” every 10 seconds.
