Pros
In this day and age, all children and teenagers want some form of tablet to browse the Internet, to read a book on or to perhaps use to play a game or two or to communicate with their friends.
Gadgets, including tablets, are expensive. Granted this Kindle Fire 7 (to denote that diagonally across the screen it measures 7” {7inches i.e. 17.78cm) is not an iPad. However for WHAT it offers I think it is quite good value for money and my young teenagers (12-year-olds do like it).
They particularly like that they can read lots of different types of books on it, that it has BBC iPlayer, Netflix and Overdrive apps on it. By the way, the Overdrive app is an app that allows you to register on it with Your Local Library Card Membership Number and PIN - this then allows you to borrow eBooks (i.e. electronic books) from your local library WITHOUT ever incurring library fines. This is because the books are automatically returned to the Library Electronic Bookshelves when they are DUE BACK or if another person requests an electronic copy of books in short supply.
Anyway, getting back to the topic at hand, there are Social Media Apps such as Facebook app and Instagram on it, but then each family decides WHAT they feel is appropriate for their child.
The Tablet was very easy to set-up. I like this 2019 Version [released in the UK in June 2019] has an option, whereby WHEN you long-press the power button, TWO OPTIONS come up, 1) to Either Power Off (i.e. turn off the tablet) or to RESET the Tablet (IF there’s a glitch on the tablet or you’re having problems with the smooth operation of it).
I’ve bought and inserted SD Cards on my children’s tablets, as well as put a glass shatter-proof screen protector AND A Lovely Cover I bought from Amazon to protect their new tablets.
My children have had their tablets for a few weeks now and they love their tablets AND THE TABLETS HAVE ALSO BEEN TROUBLE-FREE, unlike the previous generations of the Kindle Fire 7, which appeared to be “glitchy”, sometimes slow and at times totally unresponsive.
I would recommend that one buys a Kindle Fire 7 with at least a 16Gb Hard-Drive Memory (It comes to about 10.5 Gb Useable Storage Space I believe after the Operating System Requirements etc). It is worth stretching to the 32Gb Version IF one can afford it, as low-hard-drive memory tends to slow down the performance of the tablet.
I LIKE THAT THE AMAZON TABLETS HAVE EXCELLENT PARENTAL CONTROLS THAT CAN BE ACTIVATED ON THE CHILDREN’S TABLETS & also that IF you’ve bought an item, be it a film or an app, you can make it available to your child. More and more operating systems are going this way - that IF you’ve bought an app or a film or a song or an album THAT you can make it available to other people in your family. I also like that YOU CAN FOR A MONTHLY OUTLAY OF UK GBP £4.99 SUBSCRIBE TO AMAZON KINDLE FAMILY, WHICH ALLOWS YOUR CHILDREN TO HAVE UNLIMITED ACCESS TO VARIOUS KINDLE LIBRARY BOOKS.
There are some good deals available on Amazon every now and then for Kindle Tablets AND I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND PAYING THE UK GBP £10.00 EXTRA TO HAVE THE ADVERTS REMOVED on the Tablets, otherwise the adverts CAN at times BE ANNOYING OR IRRITATING or perhaps feel intrusive.
Thank you so much for reading my rather long REVIEW. I hope you’ve found it of some HELP!
Cons
I bought this to use at work on tea breaks and such. Screen size was quite small compared to the fire tablet I bought my wife a few yrs ago and battery life seems awful so far too. For example, I fully charged tablet, then left it in my bag all following day without using it. When I took it out the bag at home it had 17% battery remaining. Hadn’t even used it? I have Netflix and prime video installed and it asked me what quality to download for offline viewing. I opted for best and it downloaded over WiFi. When I watch video however it seems to stutter whilst playing back the video on internal memory like it hasn’t got the processing power to cope with it. It feels slow using all the apps I have installed so far. It is cheap in fairness but I definitely regret my purchase. Think I’ll just save for another iPad instead.
