Pros
I have been very impressed with the M1 chip reviews online, for once it looks like there is some exciting innovation over at Apple. I'm typically happy with PCs, but enjoyed using a MacBook Air since 2014, but the hardware was holding me back with various applications, so it was time to replace it, I'm glad I did.
The 13" display is great looking, a huge leap from my old laptop, sharp and colourful. BUT it lags behind what's available for desktop PCs these days. I've already got a 1440p 166Hz external display. Sadly this MacBook can't utilize that to its full potential as an external display, I believe with current hardware means I'm limited to 30Hz @ 1440p or 4k which is a bit meh! The hardware on this 13" model isn't going to blow your mind like maybe Retina might have when it was new, but that said, the built in screen is still way better than low end laptops, that's for sure.
The only others cons so far with this model is the 256 GB hard drive. You'll may eventually need to consider some external storage solution as 256GB doesn't go far these days. Ideally you'll want something with fast read/write speeds, taking advantage of the thunderbolt 4 connection. I have 1gbs wireless NAS at home, so this is no problem for me, but I'm limited away from home, so I think I'll eventually think about an external SSD of some sort. This being the base 8GB RAM model concerned me a little at first, but I haven't experienced any limitations in my relatively light use case. Power users probably want to look elsewhere, but for a standard home laptop, browsing, light file editing etc, 8GB will go a long way, especially with Apples memory swapping made possible by the M1. I have a 32GB RAM, i7, RTX 2070 desktop PC for heavy-duty work anyway, but some tech guy reviews of the M1 suggest it might actually be better anyway, time will tell.
Cons
Battery life was good, didn’t get hot. Very small and lightweight. Ideal for carrying about, amazing screen and so quick. I returned it though as I thought it had a normal USB slot for memory sticks but it doesn’t, most of my work is on sticks so there is no way I could spend that money and not have a USB slot. Also beware that you can’t reset them unless you have a Mac to plug it into to reload the IOS software back onto it. If you don’t have Mac you have to take it to an Apple store for them to do, which I think is really really poor. It’s something to do with the new M1 chips.
