About this item

Contrary to what you may remember, the Sony PS1 actually came out before the N64. While Nintendo’s 1996 console is regularly regarded as the system that launched the industry into the third dimension, it was actually the PS1 that pushed everything forward in 1995. Sony’s console took gamers into the 3D space with titles like Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII. It offered a more serious, adult take on the industry, while still providing zany kid games like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. The PS1 was a landmark console.

Pros

I really don't understand all the negative comments, this is a fantastic piece of nostalgia. Yes the graphics are shockingly bad but that's how they were back in the 90s and within a few moments of playing an old classic you get used to them. The console comes with a hdmi lead but this is to make sure its compatible with with modern TV'S rather than for any HD element. Would it have been nice to see all these games remastered and upscaled with modern graphics? Yes, but then the console wouldn't be able to run them. Of course it would have been nice to see more games on there but I'm really happy with what's here, really brings the memories back. I love it, the wife loves it and now I can show my son how the metal gear legend was born! 5 stars from me, my only real criticism is that the leads for the controllers are far too short so I'll need some extensions but as they are USB that won't cost alot and the omission of a plug seems strange but it does come with the USB power lead so plugs into any phone charger. Hopefully theres a way to get more games in the future but I'm very happy with it for what it is

Cons

I was one of the first people in the UK to get hold of the very original PS1, so that makes me old I know. However my memory isn't that bad, I loaded and tried to play Tekken 3 and Ridge Racer 4 and a few others. They did load, albeit having to wait for them to load. But the frame rate, blurry pixels (no not quite my eyesight yet) no up-scaling, borders on the edge no fancy rendering made my heart sink. This is terrible. GTA has truly awful emulation. I know things have moved on, but the emulation was horrible. I was not expecting HD remasters of every single game, but a lot of them had issues with sound and frame rates and general unresponsiveness.

Never have I been so disappointed.

Maybe I should have waited for these reviews, I definitely would not have bought it. I do NOT recommend this item however tempting it sounds.

Honestly you are better off sourcing the originals and getting a PS3 or a PS2 that can play PS1 games.

On paper a brilliant concept, in practice dreadful implementation.

EDIT: Why on earth didn't I just buy a PS One, it's only about 5cm wider and longer than this and can be found for about £20 with a power adaptor but no games.

EDIT2: Paid £90 when it came out and it is already down to £50 in the New Year Sales.

EDIT3: Has powered itself off twice now. I suggest saving every hour or so. Concerned now with the long term quality of this item. Fed up with it now and decided to open it up, the large passive heat-sink sits on the main CPU/GPU I imagine that it powered off due to overheating. Heading for the dustbin!!
