Pros
This SSD is excellent value and is a way to boost performance (depending upon your requirements) on a laptop currently with traditional hard drive. As previous reviewers have pointed out, its write is slower than read so if you are going to be transferring large amounts of data to it on a regular basis you might want to look elsewhere (including the whereabouts and contents of your wallet!). I used it to upgrade a Dell latitude Intel i5 laptop which I use primarily for giving presentations: consequently I need fast start-up and access to my files. Write speed is relatively unimportant to me and it may well be for the general user also: just remember that one of the most irritating thing about computers is the time it takes to access programs and data – this SSD will solve the problem for you. For general use writing to disk most people won't be aware of the slightly slower speed because when you save a file or even transfer data you normally just let the computer to get on with it and do something else. Computer experts will be aware of what they need anyway but I would suggest for the average non-geek user this SSD will be entirely adequate. E.g. my laptop now boots up in 15 seconds and there is no longer an annoying wait while it ploughs through the start-up sequence.
Installation is easy (just search for this video on YouTube (Dell Latitude E6410 Upgrade SSD Drive Memory). This particular Kingston package does not come with a spacer (SSD's are thinner than traditional hard drives) but these are easily obtainable and you will probably find that you don't need it anyway due to the fixings in the laptop. You will need some specialist software to transfer your old operating system (e.g. Windows) and data. I use Paragon hard disk manager which is cheap, effective and reasonably straightforward as this sort of software goes. But there are also lots of alternatives, some are free Open Source. If you are not computer geek-competent then I recommend you get expert help. If you have original installation discs you could course just reinstall the operating system and then copy your data across – for non-experts that might be an easier solution.
I'm very pleased with this item and therefore recommended it. Always keep in mind when buying computer hardware that most of it will be reclassified as "obsolete & unfashionable junk" in just a few short years, so unless you have specialist requirements and know your way around them, it's probably more sensible to spend the minimum amount needed to achieve an improvement. Once you reach a certain level, any improvement comes at a disproportionate cost for most people.
Basically you can't go wrong for 25 quid!
Cons
So I just received this Kingston SA400M8/240G and fitted it into my computer.
As soon as I turned on the PC we already have a problem. My old SSD is not recognized anymore for some reason.
I decide to proceed with the installation of Windows 10 PRO and get some tests done.
It looks like this is a very cheap B-grade memory. From my tests, it's clear that memory is cheap for a reason.
It underperforms in most metrics and compared to my old 2.5 old SSD is a lot slower.
Further tests suggest the firmware is generic and speeds are not consistent.
In conclusion :
1) save your money, this is a very bad product and probably slower than your existing SSD
2) I have requested a refund on the same day and will never buy Kingstone again.
3) I have noticed that reviews for this product are mixed with other products which makes the feedback for this specific product irrelevant placing it at an overall rating of 4 stars plus when it should more la 1 star
4) Last but not least, there is a fake discount. Anywhere on the internet, the price is around 28 quid.
